Smee Busby Architects

Whitson Construction Co., Inc. was selected for the complete façade replacement of Smee Busby Architects’ office in Knoxville. The building was a 100+ year old church that also housed an active coffee shop in the basement level. Our team worked in strategic phases, removing all of the existing vinyl siding and installing new structural bracing, insulation, plywood sheathing, Tyvek wrapping, and board & batten siding and trim. We also installed all new fascia and soffits.

Perhaps the biggest challenge of the project was replacing the custom-made trim on the antique stained-glass windows on the front of the building, directly over the coffee shop’s entrance. However, with careful planning and execution, we were able to replace all of the window trim, as well has install new clear glass for the lower panes, while keeping the coffee shop operational.

This project went on the receive the Orchid Award in 2023 from Keep Knoxville Beautiful as well as the AGC Build Award in 2024.
